Why study German?

Many people underesitmate the value of studying German abroad in Germany, below are a few reasons why studying the language gives people a huge advantage and many opportunities, not just in Europe but throughout the world.

Communicating in central Europe
Many people are under the impression that German is only spoken within Germany iteself. However, this could not be further from the truth. German is in fact one of the ten most frequently spoken languages in the world and more people speak it as their native language than any other language in Europe. It is a key language when communicating in central Europe. The language also being spoken in Austria, most people in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, areas of Northern Italy, Eastern Belgium and Eastern France, and also by people in the Netherlands, Denmark, parts of Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, and Romania.

There are 120 million German speakers worldwide, with many people speaking and studying it as a second language, it is also the 3rd most popular foreign langauge taught worldwide.

Business Opportunities
People who can communicate in German have a large advantage when it comes to doing business in Germany and other European Union countries. Germany has the third largest economy in the world. This means that there are many business opportunities within this country and other European countries, where German is the second most spoken language after Russian.
The language is also important when seeking employment in the US. There are many German companies within the US, accounting for approximately 700,000 jobs.

Germany's presence on the Internet
Germans have a very dominant Internet presence. There are approximately 8 million Internet domains, Germany's top-level country domain .de is second only to the extension .com. The popularity of the domain name has superceded those with .net, .org, .info, and .biz extensions. The country which falls into third place, the UK, with the extension .uk, is far behind with only 3.7million domain names.

Germany's culture and literature
Germany is considered to have one of the greatest cultures in Europe, and no wonder since so many of the great thinkers, musicians and famous people from the past came from this beautiful country. With the country being often referred to as the land of "Dichter und Denker" - of poets and thinkers. People such as, Goethe, Nietzsche, Kant, Marx, Kafka, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Freud and Einstein all have the Germany's main language in common and have contributed highly to the arts and human thought making their contributions nothing short of profound. Literature is also high up on the list when it comes to the language, with many books being published in Germany each year, approximately making up 18% of the books published throughout the world, making the country the third largest publisher of books world-wide. If you are interested in literature from Germany and want to be able to be able to read the originals then German is the language to study.

German ancestry in the US
German Americans have the largest single heritage group in the US, with 42.8 million or 15.2% of Americans reported as having German ancestry in the 2000 census. With the Germans introducing many things that are still well known in the US today, such as kindergarten, the Christmas tree, hot dogs and hamburgers. There is even a version of the Declaration of Independence in German, which was printed only a few days after it was adopted.

The reason you may want to study German may not be covered by any of the topics here. You may have a wife/husband from Germany, girlfriend/boyfriend or other family members from the country that would entice you to study the language and take some German lessons. It is not uncommon for people to come to Germany for these reasons.
